Bundelkhand:There is hope of a good harvest yet K.K. Shukla

KANPUR: As monsoons have come as a blessing for drought hit-- Bundelkhand, the bountiful rains in Kanpur region too are encouraging the farming community for paddy. "The natural water in the form of rains have flooded the fields, which is an ideal deal for the farmers looking forward for paddy plantation," informed President, Kisaan Kamagar Samelan, KK Shukla.

He further said that continuous rain spell in the region has surely been beneficial for the farmers reducing the cost of plantation. "Until last year, the farmers had to draw water from tubewells, at the rate of Rs 150 per hour including the electricity cost. Now, when the rains are active, the farmers will not have to spend extra money on extracting water," said Shukla adding that the rains synonymous with corns will be encouraging its production.

Considering the fact that excess water of rains may damage the crop, the agricultural experts have also advised to use the contingent plants along with the Kharif crops. "Taking advantage of moisture content in the atmosphere, the farmers should also ensure the sowing of urad, groundnut, sorghum along with the paddy," said Dr Anurudh Dubey of CSA University.

For paddy production, the farmers need to store the rain water in fields but for cultivation of millets, the rain water should be drained out, he added.

Going by weather experts, it is appropriate time for the storage of water. The excessive drawing of ground water, which had otherwise made the land dry can be compensated by natural water.

"The downpour in past few days has been sufficient to meet the demand of water to irrigate the paddy fields. The water should be restored by digging ponds at the farms," maintained Dr Dubey. Besides, water harvesting is cheapest and easiest way to recharge the ground water resources.

Meanwhile, the monsoons in the city has given the umbrella and raincoat dealers to make a mint in wake of rainy season.
